Challenge

The CAN bus is often not located where the engineer is.

When developing and operating electronic systems, engineers regularly need access to the CAN bus: to monitor messages, check a control unit’s response, send commands, perform configuration, or carry out calibration.

However, the equipment may be located on a test bench, in another laboratory, at a production site, in field testing, or at a remote facility. As a result, a simple engineering task can turn into a site visit, equipment transfer, manual adapter connection, or dependence on an on-site specialist.

CANServer solves this problem by connecting the CAN bus to an Ethernet network and providing remote access to it over TCP/IP.

Solution

CANServer connects CAN equipment with remote TCP/IP clients.

CANServer is installed on a server, industrial computer, workstation, or virtual machine that has access to a hardware CAN interface.

The software receives messages from the CAN bus and forwards them to all connected clients over TCP/IP. In the opposite direction, CANServer receives data from TCP/IP clients and translates it back to the CAN bus.

This allows engineering applications to work with a remote CAN network as if they were connected to it locally.
